Fred W. Layman III, USPTA Elite
Biography
Championship tennis player, instructor and business executive, Fred W. Layman III has watched, competed in, and taught tennis with the insight and emotion of a man, who has made a life out of his love for a game.
Fred was a three sport athlete at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, where he was the first tennis player to place in state from Jefferson County and the first to receive a tennis scholarship to college. Fred played at Bethany College, in Kansas, for world renowned Sports Psychologist, Dr. Bryce Young, where he fell in love with team play and found a talent for coaching.
Over the years he honed his coaching philosophy based on foundational mechanics and performance, with the belief that success and winning would be a by-product of those efforts. His emphasis is on a cooperative style of coaching that recognizes the importance of providing leadership to a player but also recognizes the athletes input on swift decision making.This larger role for players allows them to grow and mature, and helps enhance their self-image as the coach places greater trust in the player.
Fred has been recognized by the national offices of the USTA and USPTA as a “Competitive Training Center Director,” in addition to successes in the organization of the Georgia, Colorado, and Connecticut USTA Competitive Training Centers, Team Connecticut, Team Colorado and The University of Tennis Junior Camp, Fred Layman co-authored Prince Playland which had significant input in the USTA National Mandate implementation of Quick Start Tennis. In 1996 he was selected Connecticut “USPTA Pro of the Year” and in 1998 he was selected Western New England “USPTA Pro of the Year” as well as the USTA National Zonal Team “Coach of the Year” and USTA Grass Roots “Pro of the Year”.
Mr. Layman has extensive knowledge in the club start up business. Consulting and managing such mega projects as Meadow Creek Indoor Tennis Center, Faulkner Tennis Center, Mount Vintage Plantation Athletic Club, Fountain Head Country Club, Forest Hills Racquet Club, The Mystic Indoor Tennis Club and North Augusta Golf and Country Club.
Fred Layman is now a 24 year veteran of the USPTA and is currently studying for his USPTA Master Professional qualifications to be one of a handful of USPTA Professionals in the world with these certification credentials.
